Amistad Lowrider Car Show, June 27th
June 24th, 2010Filed under: Collections, Events

Come this Sunday, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., to the Amistad Lowrider Car Club Car Show at 8601 West Fullerton Avenue in west suburban River Grove. The Museum is one of many co-sponsors of the event. Visitors to the show will see a great array of cool cars ranging from 1960s lowriders to muscle cars to tricked out bicycles. Gleaming paint jobs, chrome, and hopping cars will definitely be some of the day’s highlights.
Back in 2006, the Museum worked with Amistad of Cicero to create the low rolling treasure that graces the Museum’s main lobby, a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo lowrider. I worked closely with Amistad on this project as they opened their garages and homes to me, schooling me in lowrider history and culture.
Amistad, which means “friendship” in Spanish, is a self-styled “small club with a big heart.” The group originally formed as a bicycle club in Bishop, Texas in 1978. A member of the Texas chapter moved to Cicero and organized the local version in 2001. Amistad is active in the local lowrider community, and the Museum co-sponsored one of its last big car shows in 2007.
