The Latest on Lincoln Park

Celebrate your survival of the shortest day of the year by checking out the latest updates to the Lincoln Park Block by Block map on Google.
A few of us started building the map last summer with snippets from Studs Terkel’s programs and other oral history collections. This fall, many of the DePaul University students taking the public history course at the Museum became roving recorders. They captured the voices of longtime residents and the sounds of Lincoln Park life (”life” included going to bars and clubs, strictly for work purposes) to beef up the material and broaden the range of experiences.
Starting from Halsted Avenue, the students divided and conquered all points to the east and west. While the West team learned about a butcher’s life from Otto Gepperth and had a beer at Kelly’s Pub, the East team explored the sights and sounds of the Caldwell lily pool and Lincoln Park Conservatory. They collected so much material over a couple of months that we are in a mad dash to get it all online. We aren’t finished yet—I’ll let you know when we add more.
Thanks to the students for being our eyes and ears on in Lincoln Park. To the West team: Anne, Jose, Zac, and Courtney #1; and to the East team: Pete, Fazila, Erica, and Courtney #2. Great work!
