Fashion Week

Fashion Week is a week-long event in the fashion industry where designers present their latest creations on catwalks around the world. Although celebrities and general fashionistas attend the shows, the purpose of fashion week is for the press and buyers to get the first look at the upcoming trends. Fashion Week is typically twice per year with the fall/winter collections presented from January through March and the spring/winter collections presented from September through November. The reason the shows are a little ahead of the season is to provide press and buyers with time to make their selections and prepare their advertising and marketing.

The first fashion week started in New York City in the early 1940s to draw attention to American designers since connections with Europe we severed due to World War II. This was the first time in American history that fashion was not influence by European designers. Today, fashion week occurs in dozens of cities around the world, but the four major fashion weeks occur in New York, London, Milan and Paris (in that order). Chicago’s fashion week, called Fashion Focus, for 2008 was held from October 1st through the 8th with numerous events with many sold-out shows.
